On February 12th 2009 Stephen Baxter will be speaking on evolution in sf at Birmingham University's 'Darwin Day', the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

Stephen Baxter has agreed two new book contracts with his UK publisher Gollancz: for 'The Northland Trilogy', a working title for a new saga of alternate prehistory; and for an omnibus of his early Xeelee books

Stephen Baxter has been elected a 'Friend of Fanderson', the Gerry Anderson appreciation society, in recognition of articles on 1960s comics and other aspects of Anderson's work he has contributed to the society's magazine.

Stephen Baxter at IAC.
Stephen Baxter addressed the final session of the International Astronautical Congress, a major annual convention of the space industry, in Glasgow, October 2008, on sf and spaceflight. He shared a stage with, among others, Sergei Krikalev, a cosmonaut who holds the record for most cumulative days spent in space.

Stephen Baxter misses a Hugo.
Stephen Baxter's 'Last Contact' was nominated for a 2007 Hugo award in the short story category; the winner, announced at the 'Denvention' Worldcon in Denver, Colorado, was Elizabeth Bear's fine story 'Tideline'. Stephen Baxter's
The H-Bomb Girl, having been nominated for the 2007 Clarke Award, was also nominated for a Locus Award for best young adult novel of 2007 - but failed to win that too.

Stephen Baxter elected BSFA President.
At its AGM in June 2008 the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) elected Stephen Baxter its President, in succession to the late Sir Arthur C Clarke. Stephen Baxter had been serving as Vice President since 1999.

Baxter to appear in Liverpool in September.
Stephen Baxter is to speak on Monday September 8th at the British Association's Festival of Science, which this year is to be held in Baxter's home town of Liverpool to celebrate its year as European City of Culture. Details are to be confirmed.

Baxter Nominated for Hugo Award.
Stephen Baxter's short story 'Last Contact' has been nominated for the Hugo Award for best sf short story of 2007.
The award will be presented at this year's Worldcon,
Denvention 3 in Denver, Colorado (6-10 August), which Baxter hopes to attend.
'Last Contact' was first published in The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction, ed. George Mann, BL Publishing, 2007,
and reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction, 25th Collection, ed. Gardner Dozois, St Martin's Press, 2008.

Baxter Nominated for Clarke Award.
Stephen Baxter's young adult novel The H-Bomb Girl (Faber) has been nominated for the Arthur C Clarke Award for the best sf novel published in Britain in 2007.

Baxter joints SETI Post-Detection Taskgroup.
Following his attendance in February 2008 at a meeting in Arizona of the International Academy of Astronautics' SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Life) Permanent Study Group, Stephen Baxter has been appointed to the Post-Detection Taskgroup, which is responsible for policies concerning science protocols, news handling and other issues were a signal from an alien civilisation to be detected. Baxter is to attend the PSG's next meeting in Paris, September 2008.

Baxter in SETI workshop.
Stephen Baxter has been invited to participate in a workshop on the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the Arizona State University's Beyond Institute in February 2008. The idea is to rethink search strategies after fifty years of radio silence from the sky.

Baxter story in best of 30 years of Asimov's.
Stephen Baxter's story 'The Children of Time' has been reprinted in Asimov's SF Magazine 30th Anniversary Anthology, (ed. Sheila Williams, Tachyon Books, 2007), a selection of the editors' pick of the best stories published during the magazine's 30-year run. Baxter's first publication in Asimov's was 'Planck Zero' (1992). 'The Children of Time' won the Asimov's Reader's Poll Award for the magazine's best short story of 2005.

Stephen Baxter to give H.G.Wells Lecture
Stephen Baxter, a Vice President of the HG Wells Society, is to give a public lecture as part of the Society’s conference to be held at Imperial College, London, on Friday 28th September 2007.
The theme of the conference is ‘Wells and philosophy’, and Baxter’s talk will be titled: ‘The War of the Worlds: A Controlling Metaphor for the 20th Century’.

Stephen Baxter contributes to Mars study.
Since 2004 Stephen Baxter has been working with a group
from the British Interplanetary Society on a design study for a manned base at the Martian north pole.
Baxter is a Fellow of the BIS. The study, led by astrobiologist Charles Cockell, has now been
published under the title 'Project Boreas', and Cockell will present the conclusions at a seminar
in London in March 2007

Stephen Baxter Signs New Contract
Stephen Baxter has sold the worldwide rights in two new novels to Gollancz Publishers via his agent PFD. Baxter says that
‘Flood’ (to be published in autumn 2008) and
‘Ark’(autumn 2009) will be ‘stories of a global convulsion and its aftermath’. Gollancz’s UK editions will be the world first.
